Egyptian Coffins

December 15th, 2007

Egyptian Coffins Egyptian coffins are also known as the sarcophagi, they are the largest stone coffins known and are usually found with high polishing and they are also covered throughout with hieroglyphics (ancient dialect of Egypt as it is known today), depicting history of the deceased . Coffins shaped to the form of the body were also used. These coffins were made of hard wood or papier mache.

They were painted with bright colors and like the stone coffins, bore hieroglyphics. The Egyptians were the religious people and their coffins wore many religious symbols and markings. One of the stories goes like Osiris was once a living king of Egypt. He was married to his sister, Isis. Their evil brother, Seth, was married to their sister, Nephthys. Seth wanted to be king of Egypt, so he planned to kill Osiris. One day Seth tricked Osiris into stepping into a golden coffin. When Osiris was inside the coffin, Seth slammed the lid shut and threw the coffin into the Nile River.

While Seth took the throne of the Egypt, Isis went to get the body of her husband Osiris. When she returned to Egypt with the body of Osiris, Seth seized the body and ripped it. He threw the 14 pieces of the body into the Nile. Wherever a piece of the body was found, Isis built a temple to Osiris. Once she had collected all of the pieces of Osiris’ body, Isis turned into a kite. Isis flapped her wings until the breeze from her wings breathed life back into Osiris’ body. After Osiris was resurrected, Isis gave birth to their son, Horus. Osiris was ruler over the land of the dead, while Isis raised Horus to avenge his father’s murder. After years of fighting against Seth, Horus finally won and became king of Egypt. Many temples were built in his honor.

Infant Grave Markers

December 15th, 2007

Infant Grave Markers Loosing a child is a life shattering experience, but if somebody has to bear the loss at the infant stage then it becomes much more tragic. Practically nothing can console the affected individual for the emotional trauma suffered by them in such circumstances.

Some people opine that an infant grave marker can start the process from which some sort of solace can be attained. The infant grave markers are available in several styles and in various materials, each one having its unique advantages. The popular material used for the infant grave markers are bronze, granite and marble.

Bronze Infant Grave Markers are the most appropriate ones for many modern day cemeteries. Bronze infant grave markers are made up of a bronze plaque mounted to a granite base and they are mostly designed to lay flat on the ground. Bronze serves as a canvass upon which imagery can be cast in relief form to present a sculptured appearance. Some models of the bronze infant grave marker include a vase for the placement of flowers.
Granite and marble are supposed to be one of the most durable stones in existence; this makes them an excellent choice for an infant grave marker as its durability is unquestionable.

These infant grave markers come in a variety of styles and different granite colors, as far as the color of the marble is concerned most of the time white and black color is used. The different styles available there are like upright infant grave markers, slant infant grave markers, bevel infant grave markers and flat infant grave markers. Companion Grave Markers

December 15th, 2007

Companion Grave Markers Sometime the love between the couple compels the near and dear ones to bury them together or adjacent to each other. This encouraged the fashion of the companion graves. The companion graves are the usually a set of two graves located side by side. The companion graves are generally memorized by a single grave marker known as the companion grave markers.  The size of the companion grave markers is larger than the size of the single adult grave markers. However the material for the production of these markers provides a choice between sandstone, granite, marble and bronze.

Since these markers have a larger size therefore they have immense potential to include intricate designs with epitaph etc. The design option in the case of the companion grave markers is found to be much wider. They include flat, slanting, pillar, arch and all other designs. Due to the larger size of the companion grave markers, sometimes statues are also incorporated. Beside that there is ample scope of customizing these grave markers according to your choice. The most popular choice among the people for the companion narrows down to three and they are flat, slanting and arch. Usually the arch shaped companion grave markers are not in regular use in the modern times but in earlier days they were used quite often.

Companion grave markers are the fitting tribute to the deceased couple and always memorize them together as they were united in their lifetime. The flat companion grave markers are the most popular ones in the modern times. They are usually available in granite or bronze. Ike the normal adult grave markers they are also made using the same process.

Cremation Urns

November 18th, 2007

Cremation Urns Since ages many countries in the world use to cremate the dead bodies. In the beginning, cremation processes involved primitive methods for achieving the end result, at present technology have given rise to a more standardized version of the process. Companies throughout the world manufacture different size of cremators that reduce the amount of time necessary to complete the cremation. It generally takes about 1-1/2 to 2 hours for a body to be completely reduced to just the bone fragments by cremation. Some cremation furnaces, especially the older ones, may require a little more time.

After the process is completed, a cool down period of 30 minutes to an hour is needed before the bone fragments can be handled for further processing. The remaining bone fragments are then placed in a special processor. This processor pulverizes the bone fragments to a fine powder commonly referred to as the ashes. The ashes are then placed in a temporary cremation urn by the crematory. The ashes are then returned to the family.
The quantity of ashes varies from one person to another and may not be proportionate to a person’s body weight/ height etc., but some broad guidelines are available that may help you.  The quantity of the ashes for an adult may go up to 200 cu. inches, an infant 1 year and younger may be up to 30 cu. Inches, in case of  children it may vary due to the size of an individual.

Cremation urns are available in number of sizes, styles, shapes and materials. Usually, urns are available to accommodate every taste, need and budget. The range for selection of an urn includes bronze, pewter, marble, granite, brass, hardwoods, porcelain, ceramic, stone, glass and cloisonné. Urns range in styling from the traditional book shape and classic Grecian design to novel creations and decorative art pieces and can be personalized to depict an individual’s hobby or special interest. Some designs may have a photo of the individual being memorialized through the urn.
Many urns are produced in smaller dimensions to hold a very small portion of the ashes. These urns are known as the keepsake urns. These urns are appropriate when the family of the deceased individual opts to divide the ashes among family members or the family opts to scatter the ashes in a scattering garden and want to keep a small portion of the ashes for the memory of the individual.

Beside the glass has connection to the Earth because of the main ingredient, sand, glass urns are an excellent choice for nature lovers, perhaps other than marble urns, glass urns, have the distinction of being made from the oldest material. Natural glass is rare and expensive than man-made glass, but it can be found. Glass blowers spend countless hours perfecting their art of glass blowing. Art Glass Cremation Urns show patterned color and built to last, each of the hand blown glass cremation urns is a unique piece of art. Crystal glass is a very special type of glass; it is made from silver sand, red lead oxide, and potash. The crystal glass has a greater degree of brilliance as compared to the ordinary glass. Because of its special qualities, it is most suitable material for cutting and engraving.

Urn Glassblowing is a special process in which the raw materials are mixed in fireproof pots and heated to 1400 degrees Celsius. Now the professional glassblower dips his blow pipe made up of cast iron in the liquid crystal and draws out the required amount of liquid for the making of the urn.  The drop that remains suspended from the pipe is blown into a bubble, which is blown into a desired shape. A blow pipe measures approximately one and a half yards in length and it is really very difficult to handle the pipe.

The red-hot crystal urn may be shaped by hand after covering it with wet paper for protection. In this ancient craft wood urn block molds and metal shears are used extensively. Some times a two-part metal mold is used, which presses the crystal poured into the desired profile. Many of the blowers prefer to use the wooden molds, the wood used to make the mould is pear wood. Pear wood has a very fine structure; it also has a special quality of retaining its shape while it is wet.  During the blowing process, the molds are saturated with water to offer them protection. The red-hot crystal forces the water to boil, causing a layer of steam to develop between the crystal and the wood urn mold wall, which is why the same mold can be used more than once.

Natural Stone Urns

November 18th, 2007

Natural Stone UrnsNatural stone include marble, onyx, and granite, these all are used to make the beautiful urns. Natural stone urns symbolize a remarkable association between nature and human being offering us wonderfully carved works of art. There are two main processes for producing a natural stone urn. They are lathe-crafted urns and handcrafted urns. Natural stone urns are unique in their appearance with exclusive features due to the unique characteristics of natural stone. Natural stone materials are some of the most durable, easy to care for, and stunning design elements for the indoors or outdoors.

All of the natural stones start off as limestone or sand stone and through the very long natural process of metamorphosis it turns into what we know as marble, onyx or granite. It is generally used in fine building work, furniture and decorative art. These natural stones are excavated in large pieces, separated from the surrounding rock and brought to the processing mills where the stone is further processed.

The process of making a natural stone urn proceeds in two distinct ways one is semi mechanized and the other is purely hand crafting. The semi mechanized process involves the use of a stone lathe in which a block of natural stone is placed. Then piece of stone reveals the beautiful urn by skilled hands of the workman. Once the final shape is achieved the inner and outer walls of the urn are smoothened by the use of grinders. The urn is then finished with a high luster polish to give it a glass like in appearance.
The other process is handcrafted natural stone urn. In this process the block of a desired natural stone is hand crafted using fine grade hand tools, once the final shape is obtained and it is intricately carved to the taste of the craftsman the urn is then polished. Such types of urns are usually a delicate piece of art. The shine we see on polished stone urns is achieved by rubbing them with a coarse abrasive grit for the first time, followed by finer grits until the stone becomes smooth to the point of mirror image.
